Wasp Hollow

This perfectly round hole on the bamboo stem is the
work of wasps. They're black with some bright yellow
on the lower part of the abdomen. I was stung once
but the pain wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. In
the winters, I like to have a fire in the backyard.
A lot of rubbish from dead branches and spiky leaves
are burnt.
It was during one such occasion that a hibernating
wasp emerged from a smouldering fire, with a drone,
and too dazed with the heat, the sleep, and the smoke-
it didn't take long to die. Since then, I've been
careful with bamboo, bearing the handiwork of wasps.
I use a lot of dead bamboo for my cheery backyard
fire but now these ones are used as support for my
plants or for the clothes-line!

Kanak we have a similar one, a bumblebee called the carpenter bee, because it makes holes in old trees. I was never stung, so they chase me away if I come to close to look.

Learning more about bees/wasps/hornets now (busy googling). Thanks for dropping by, Trudi.
